San Damiano Church

relevance for the project

It is well preserved, it is relevant for architectural issues, it is relevant for touristic routes.

The church of San Damiano, located near Assisi, was built between the 8th and the 9th centuries. At the beginning it was an important Benedictine Priory but after 1030 it was gradually abandoned.

According to the Franciscan sources, in 1205, St. Francesco after hearing an exhortation form Christ to “go and repair my house, which is in ruins” took action to physically repair the structure of the San Damiano church, although he eventually realized that God's message to him was to restore the entire Catholic Church.
